13 (Mostly) Happy Years!

HoneyBear and I are celebrating our 13th wedding anniversary this week, and we went on our customary anniversary date last night. Even though I am hugely pregnant, it was one of our best date nights yet!

We went to see the Stardust Big Band, who plays regularly around Hot Springs, and I was thrilled to discover my former college clarinet professor, Dr. Earl Hesse, leading the saxophone section. I remember Dr. Hesse as a very talented, fun-loving man who was well-known for his practical jokes on HSU band trips. I was able to visit with him while the band was taking a break, and I felt very honored that he seemed to remember me as well! It has been 20 years, and he doesn't seem to have aged a bit.  Here he is playing a solo…

It was fun to see people our parents' age on the dance floor “cutting a rug”. It’s definitely an inspiration to take good care of our health and stay in shape!
Some of them seemed just as amused at seeing an 8-month-pregnant woman on the dance floor. 2012-12-02 13th anniversary date 052012-12-02 13th anniversary date 062012-12-02 13th anniversary date 07
(Did I mention that I am HUGE?)

After working up a hunger, we lingered  at Belle Arti Ristorante. The atmosphere was romantic, and the lobster bisque soup, stuffed portabella mushrooms, lobster-stuffed ravioli, and filet mignon were heavenly!

Oh, well, it’s only once a year. Winking smile

After dinner, we wrapped up the night by strolling through Garvan Woodland Gardens, which boasts a  two-million light Christmas display. It was definitely worth the hour and a half it took to waddle through. HoneyBear had to pull me up some of the hills, and I wound up taking off my boots and walking in my sock feet. It was 70 degrees out! I think we’ll take the children back in a couple of weeks. Maybe it will actually feel like Christmas then?

St. Valentine’s Day

Because HoneyBear knows I’m trying to be healthier, he did something a little different.
When I opened the big heart-shaped box, instead of the chocolates I expected, I found…

…rose petals and little hand-written love notes. And packets of flower seeds for us to plant together. Sigh
The kids found me a heart-shaped leaf, which I will make into a bookmark for my daily devotional. And Sunshine brought me another heart-shaped rock for my collection.
I’m a very rich woman.

Date Night 2011

This year, we shared a quiet, uninterrupted dinner, went to the symphony, and ended up at Starbucks. Happy 12 years to us, and many more!

My Bike Route

I had a small dilemma this morning. I needed some items from the store before hubby left for work (we still have one vehicle.) I needed to exercise--if I don't exercise first thing in the morning, it's less likely to be done. And most importantly, I needed to spend time with the hubby before his long shift at the hospital. I had about an hour and a half to accomplish these three things. What to do?
Hubby and I decided to jump on our bicycles and ride down the back country roads to the store.
Dilemma solved!
(We are blessed with a terrific teenaged daughter, who not only watched the younger siblings, but she also cleaned the kitchen while we were gone.)
I couldn't help but pause for a moment to snap a couple pictures of the scenery...

St. Valentine’s Day 2011

They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend. But I would beg to differ.

My best friend rubbed lotion on my feet and painted my toenails with sparkly pink polish, as my pregnant belly makes it difficult for me to do these things myself.

My best friend loaded up all our children for an impromptu picnic at the park. He pushed them on swings, helped them down the slide, and see-sawed with them. His eyes sparkled as he watched them laugh and play.

My best friend rubbed my shoulders, gazed into my eyes, rubbed noses with me, kissed me numerous times, and told me how much he loves me throughout the day.

My best friend shared a glass of wine with me late at night after he’d helped me tuck all the little hooligans into bed and cleaned the kitchen for me (I didn’t ask; he offered).

And my best friend does these things all the time, not just one day out of the year.

To all the other girls who prefer diamonds…you can have them all.

After our picnic at the park, the kids and I baked and decorated homemade sugar cookies and made homemade pizzas for supper. It was a happy day.

Date Night

Every year for our anniversary, Bear and I try to go out on a date. Last weekend was actually our ten-year anniversary, but Bear had to work, and I was on call. No matter, we can celebrate anytime, right?
This weekend, we went to eat at our favorite Mexican restaurant, since it was the feast day of Our Lady Guadalupe. We also went to Mexico for our honeymoon, so we like revisiting those memories. :-)

After we ate, we went to a pub to hear some live blues. We used to like to do this when we were dating, but I seriously do not think we've listened to any live blues since we've been married! How sad is that?! I guess we've just been busy having and raising kids. Maybe we can make a little more time for some occasional blues.

We ended the night with our tradition of Christmas shopping for the kids. We've already bought gifts for the middle three, so we just needed to buy for the oldest and youngest.
While we were at the dreaded Wal-Mart (which was the only thing open that late, and which just happened to carry the gifts we had in mind), I noticed a bunch of people standing/sitting in the aisle. Of course, being the nosy person I am, I asked why they were hanging out in the electronic aisle at that time of night. Turns out the Toshiba laptops were going on sale for $299 beginning at midnight. What a coincidence; I just happened to be needing a laptop! So I looked at the clock, called the babysitter, and joined the line. Sho 'nuff snagged myself a new laptop for $330, counting tax. A little impulsive, yes, but it's times like this that I am glad I have a job!
While I was in line, I started blogging to pass the time, but I wound up having an interesting conversation with a couple--he had come from a family of ten, and she had come from a family of eight. She told me that they only had one child, but she had always regretted not having more. Anyway, I live for interesting conversations with strangers. :-) I must take after my daddy, huh?
So here I am, blogging on the way home after a very late and fun night. Bear and I are going to have to take shifts napping tomorrow and go to the late Mass.

What's So Great About My Bear?

One of the things that frequently comes out of peoples' mouths when they hear that I have five kids is "How do you do it?" My answer is frequently "Well, I have a good husband. I don't think I could do it without him."
It's no secret that I love my husband. I recently made up one of those silly quizzes on Facebook to see how well my friends know me. One of the questions was about my "secret crush". I gave a list of actors that everyone seems crazy about and included Bear's name on the list. That was the one question that every person who took the quiz got right. I have no interest in Brad Pitt or whoever else I grabbed to put on the list. I even read Twilight and watched the movie just because everyone else was doing it, and seriously...Edward??? I don't get it. But I digress. Y'all know I do that sometimes, right?
So anyway, what makes Bear so special? Being the low-key and behind-the-scenes kind of guy that he is, he's kind of hard to get to know. I want to share the things that he does for me and for his children, the things that make him special to us.

The number one thing I admire about Bear is the way he prioritizes his life. His faith, wife, children, parents, extended family, and helping others are at the top of his list, in that order. I sometimes am frustrated by his stubbornness, but on the flip side, that same characteristic causes him to hold staunchly to that which he believes is right. It causes him to be deeply committed to those things he sees as important. He is loyal to those he loves.
Along these lines, I never catch him "checking out" other women. I know that it's normal for guys to look, but I also know that Bear believes it's not right for married men do so. I know that he tries not to. And if he does, he never gets caught at it. I sometimes hear other women talk about the things their husbands say about other women, the things they find their husbands looking at, the way their husbands openly check out pretty girls walking by. I'm just really thankful that I don't have to deal with that. I feel honored and respected that my husband finds our marriage important enough to guard his eyes, mind, and heart.

Bear also has a servant's heart. When I read or meditate on the scene from the Last Supper where Jesus takes on the role of the servant to wash His disciples' feet, I am reminded of my husband. When he comes home after working a 12-hour shift and sees that I've had a bad day here, he asks me "What can I do for you?" He willingly bathes kids, loads the dishwasher, or does anything else that he thinks will help me. When the baby is waking up numerous times a night, he offers to take over a night feeding or get up and walk with him til he goes back to sleep. Even if he has to get up at 0530 to go to work the next morning. When I am the one who is working, he does his best to juggle all the homeschooling, diaper-changing, meals, laundry, cleaning, and referee-ing. He has to work at it harder than I do; it doesn't come naturally to him. But he puts forth his best effort, and I appreciate it.
When I am pregnant, tired, and nauseated, he goes beyond his normal helpfulness. He takes over the tasks that leave me dry-heaving, like dirty diapers or handling raw meat. If we are out walking somewhere, he automatically starts rubbing the part of my back that hurts when I am on my feet for very long. Anything he can do to ease my discomfort or make things a little easier for me, he does willingly. And sometimes I don't even have to ask.
Once the children are born, he's a devoted, involved, hands-on Daddy. He's just as comfortable soothing a newborn as he is wrestling with the older kids. He loves taking them places and doing things with them. I think he probably takes more pictures than I do. He looks at them with such love in his eyes that it melts my heart.

He's not afraid to show affection. When he leaves the house or returns home, he kisses me and tells me he loves me. He stops to gaze into my eyes, and I can see that he loves me. I can see that he's missed me while we were apart. If we are near each other, he's usually touching me...hugging, rubbing my shoulder, holding my hand, or playing "footsie". We usually fall asleep all tangled up. I know that would drive some folks crazy, but "physical touch" is one of my primary love languages. That kind of attention is right up my alley! He also leaves notes, surprises me with little gifts, calls me during the day when he gets a break, and just generally does small things to let me know he's thinking of me.

Sound like I'm describing the perfect man? Not hardly. Nor do we have the perfect relationship. He's human. I'm human. Sometimes we argue. Sometimes we even argue in front of the kids (gasp!) We may sometimes disagree on how to spend our money, how to clean the house, what activities or entertainment to choose. We may be complete opposites in how we react to situations. But on the important stuff--matters of faith, family life, life goals, morals and ethics, politics--we are on the same page. I'm really thankful that we share the same priorities. We have a good thing going here. I love you, Bear.
